"Surname, First Name, Patronymic. In this habitual construction, the mother's name is neither given nor passed on. Motherhood is the juncture of traumatized generations of Soviet women and the physically disruptive process of transmission of shattered scripts through the maternal line, the mothering." - Alina Brovina
The Matronymic project is the result of a residency for female artists-mothers. The work was based on collaborative discussions between the participants of the residency and items gifted by the artists. All items are related to the topic of motherhood and the role of women in society. They were fused by Alina to create a unified object.
The main theme that the artist emphasizes through the connection of individual elements and stitches is the violent brutality of the process of childbirth, the midwifery violence of the Soviet period, and the interaction between the participants of the project and their mothers as the dichotomy of the Soviet and contemporary.
