In the Small Series, the artist explores motherhood and its representation in contemporary art. Referring to post-structuralist feminist theory, Alina reflects upon the confrontation between the small and the inferior, in which the small becomes a major force in overcoming stereotypes about the inferiority of women's role in the world and contemporary art.
The small series based on the Judith Butler seminars, where a strategy for overcoming totalitarianism was formed: to become small and unheroic, and to acknowledge the equal value of all human lives. Butler suggests that authors should focus on small literature and small culture in general.
This series is my response to that suggestion. In the professional Russian community, artists who are mothers are perceived as inferior actors and easily left of the artistic system. I need to develop this series by demonstrating the possibility of being an artist and a mother," - Alina Brovina
